Telefónica, Ericsson, and MATSUKO Bring Holographic Calls to Smartphones with Revolutionary IMS Integration

(IN BRIEF) Telefónica, Ericsson, and MATSUKO have successfully demonstrated the integration of holographic calls directly into smartphone dialer apps using IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) Data Channel technology. This Proof-of-Concept enables real-time holographic communication without the need for additional apps, showcasing the future of 5G and 6G communication. The collaboration involved Telefónica coordinating the project, Ericsson providing the infrastructure, and MATSUKO delivering the holographic technology. The project is part of the 6G-XR European initiative, with future plans to improve video quality and explore two-way communication.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 4-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a major technological advancement, Telefónica, Ericsson, and MATSUKO have successfully demonstrated the integration of holographic calls directly into smartphone dialer apps. This cutting-edge Proof-of-Concept (PoC) showcases the potential of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) Data Channel technology for transforming future 5G and 6G communication with immersive holographic experiences.

The collaboration focused on enhancing IMS networks with advanced, standards-based technology to enable holographic calls without the need for additional apps. During the PoC, a real-time hologram of a caller’s face and torso was transmitted to the receiver using a Samsung Galaxy device. This development represents a leap forward for mobile communications, allowing users to enjoy interactive holographic experiences seamlessly integrated into their existing phone interfaces.

Telefónica coordinated the project, while Ericsson provided the IMS infrastructure, and MATSUKO delivered the holographic technology that enabled the successful transmission of holographic calls. The team aims to further improve holographic video quality and explore two-way communication to unlock even greater potential for immersive, next-generation communication.

This initiative was part of the 6G-XR European project under Horizon Europe, with plans to define industry standards for widespread adoption.
