    Ten years since Lampedusa shipwreck

    Tomorrow will be ten years since the Lampedusa shipwreck of 2013, and at midday Parliament will mark the tragic loss of over 360 women, men and children, the President said.

    Death of Giorgio Napolitano

    President Metsola expressed her condolences to the family of Giorgio Napolitano, former President of Italy, who died on 22 September. A fervent supporter of a strong Italy in Europe, he was a former MEP (1989-1992 and 1999-2004), who also chaired Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee.

    President Metsola led MEPs in a minute of silence to remember him.

    Changes to the agenda

    Tuesday

    One round of political groups’ speakers will follow the statement by the President before the beginning of the votes to mark the 10-year commemoration since the tragedy in Lampedusa.

    The title of the Council and Commission statements on Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan’s attack is changed to Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan’s attack and the continuing threats against Armenia.

    Council and Commission statements on The 10th consecutive increase in reference interest rates decided by the ECB and its consequences (without resolution) are added in the afternoon. As a consequence, the sitting is extended to 23:00.

    Wednesday

    Council and Commission statements on The spread of “anti-LGBTIQ propaganda” bills by populist parties and governments in Europe are added as the sixth point in the afternoon. As a consequence, the sitting is extended to 23:00.

    Request by several committees to start negotiations with Council and Commission

    Decisions by committees to enter into inter-institutional negotiations (Rule 71) are published on the plenary website.

    If no request for a vote in Parliament on the decision to enter into negotiations is made by Tuesday 12.00 midnight, the committees may start negotiations.
