    Shooting of Alejo Vidal-Quadras

    Speaking of former Member and Vice-President of the European Parliament, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, who was shot in Spain, President Metsola expressed Parliament’s full solidarity with him, trusting that the Spanish authorities are doing everything to bring the perpetrators to justice.

    International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

    With 22-year-old biomedical engineering student Giulia Cecchettin murdered recently in the North East of Italy, President Metsola reiterated that proper protection and more convictions are needed to end violence against women. “There are no more excuses. It is already too late”, she said, adding that Parliament must recommit to do everything possible to prevent violence against women and girls in Europe and beyond.

    Children’s Day

    On International Children’s Day, the President said Parliament will continue to help bring the many thousands of Ukrainian children who have been forcibly removed by Russia from their homes and advocate for their return. In conflict, in war, in aggression or acts of terror, it is too often innocent children who are forced to pay the ultimate price, she said. She called for the children held by Hamas to be brought home and for more to be done to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where “too many have died”.

    Death of Karel Schwarzenberg

    Remembering Karel Schwarzenberg – “a great European and a brilliant Czech statesman”- whose work was central in building modern-day Czech Republic, President Metsola said his legacy is one of endless struggle for peace, the construction of Europe and the democratic values that underpin our way of life.

    Tuesday

    Council and Commission statements on Recent developments at the EU’s external border between Finland and Russia and the need to uphold EU law are added as the sixth point in the afternoon before the short presentations.

    The sitting is extended to 23:00.

    Wednesday

    The vote on the report by Ms Strik on Negotiations on a status agreement on operational activities carried out by Frontex in Mauritania, is moved from Thursday’s to Wednesday´s votes.

    Thursday

    The vote on Thursday on the report by Mr Ruiz Devesa and Mr Simon on The European Elections 2024 is postponed to the next part-session.

    Request by several committees to start negotiations with Council and Commission

    Decisions by committees to enter into inter-institutional negotiations (Rule 71) are published on the plenary website.

    If no request for a vote in Parliament on the decision to enter into negotiations is made by Tuesday 12.00 midnight, the committees may start negotiations.
