“ Our democracy is not negotiable, ‘said President Lula of Brazil

“Multilateralism is at a new crossroads” and the world “is witness to the consolidation of an international order marked by repeated concessions to the play of power, attacks against sovereignty, arbitrary sanctions and unilateral interventions become the rule.”

He said that “in the world, anti-democratic forces are trying to subjugate institutions and suffocate freedoms. They love violence, praise ignorance, act as physical and digital militias and restrict the press. ”

    Send a message

The president, known to all under the name of Lula, said that “even under an unprecedented attack, Brazil has chosen to resist and defend its democracy grouped 40 years ago”.

He referred to the recent condemnation of his predecessor for having attacked the rule of democratic law, marking a first in the history of 525 years of his country.

“Before the eyes of the world, Brazil sent a message to all budding autocrats and those who support them: our democracy, our sovereignty is not negotiable,” he said.

    Tension in the region

Turning to the region in the broad sense, he noted that Latin American and the Caribbean “experience a period of growing polarization and instability”.

He said that “the comparison between crime and terrorism is worrying” and that the most effective way to combat drug trafficking is to cooperate to remove money laundering and limit arms trade.

“The use of deadly force in situations that do not constitute armed conflicts is equivalent to executing people without trial,” he added.

Lula stressed that “the path of dialogue should not be closed in Venezuela. Haiti has the right to a future without violence, and it is unacceptable that Cuba is listed as a country that sponsors terrorism. ”

    Concern for the Palestinian people

Meanwhile, “no situation is more emblematic of disproportionate and illegal use” than the situation in Palestine.

He warned that “the Palestinian people may disappear” and “will only survive an independent state integrated into the international community”, that more than 150 UN member states have reaffirmed.

    Climate and justice action

Lula also discussed the climate crisis. He said that the COP30 conference in the Brazilian city of Belém “will be the time for world leaders to prove the gravity of their commitment to the planet”.

Developing countries are faced with climate change in the face of other challenges, while rich nations “enjoy a standard of living reached at the end of 200 years of greenhouse gas emissions”.

“Asking for greater ambition and higher access to resources and technology is not a matter of charity, but justice,” he said.
