Afghanistan: Facts and Figures – January – June 2023

By offering a wide range of services, from health care and emergency response to the physical rehabilitation of people with disabilities to repairing critical infrastructure such as water supply systems, we were able to deliver an effective response in the first half of the year. In addition, we continue to help rebuild the livelihoods of thousands of people and provide health care to people deprived of their liberty in places of detention. The ICRC also engaged with different parties to protect and assist vulnerable people, working to reduce their exposure to risk and hardship.

A look at our activities in the first half of 2023:

    • 581,548 patients, mostly women and children, received primary health care at 47 health facilities of the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) that are supported by the ICRC.
    • 33 hospitals with a capacity of up to 7,057 beds, serving 26 million people, were supported through the payment of salaries to about 10,900 health workers and by covering the running cost of these facilities.
    • 102,226 patients were assisted in 7 ICRC-supported physical rehabilitation centres.
    • Up to 12,000 detainees in 11 prisons across the country received monthly food rations to cover three daily meals.
    • 87 cases of missing people were resolved and their whereabouts were ascertained.
    • 60 Red Cross messages (brief handwritten notes with family news) and 19 oral “safe and well” messages were exchanged between detainees and their families, and 95 Red Cross messages were collected from or distributed to civilians.
    • 3,525 families (28,200 people) received multipurpose cash assistance in Ghazni, Lashkar Gah, Herat and Panjshir to meet their basic needs.
    • 434,040 people received improved electricity supply through the provision of 75,000 litres of fuel, three diesel generators, electrical equipment and transformers to Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS).
