Start of the restoration of the front facade of the Palais de Justice in Brussels

In March 2021, the project to restore the front facade of the Palais de Justice in Brussels began. The scaffolding on the front facade has been reinforced and adapted to current standards. These scaffoldings were installed in the early 2000s to prevent rockfalls. Thanks to these measures, the main entrance to the Palais de Justice has remained functional and accessible.

The adaptation of these scaffoldings made it possible to carry out the study for the restoration of the front facade. Restoration trials were also necessary in view of the works which will now begin.

The restoration study was carried out by the “PERSPECTIV architecten” office. It was completed in the spring of 2023, following which a contractor could be appointed to carry out the work.

The work on the front facade concerns the restoration, not only of the facade itself, but also of the peristyle and the exterior joinery. The main courtyard (forecourt) will also be refurbished and a gate, conforming to the historical model, will be placed. Finally, a lighting plan will be drawn up for the Palais de Justice.

As the Palais de Justice is classified as a monument, close collaboration has been set up with the Cultural Heritage Department of the Brussels-Capital Region.
